In the context of the Birth Anniversary of Perarignar Anna, the Department of Tamil Studies of

the Mahatma Gandhi Institute is organising the following competitions:

1. Essay Writing Competition

The Essay Writing Competition is open to the following categories of participants, both in

Tamil and English:

Category 1: Category 2: Upper Secondary Students (Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12 & Grade 13)

Participants above 20 years old (Teachers, University Students & Public)

Guidelines for Essay Writing Competition

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. This competition is open to Mauritian residents only.

Submission could be either in handwritten or typewritten form.

You may participate in the essay competition in both Tamil and English according to your

category.

Participants should not write his/her personal name on the essay. They will have to use

a pen name on the essay. Participant’s pen name, personal name, age, residential address,

mobile phone number, fixed home number and email address should be enclosed in a sealed

envelope and submitted together with the essay. The participants’ personal names should

be written as per the Birth Certificate or National Identity Card (NIC).

Word count should be mentioned on the cover page.

All submissions must be original. Previously published essay will not be accepted.

Essays should not be copied from the internet or any other sources.

All essays received in the competition will become the property of MGI which reserves the

right to publish them in any form - electronic or print.

The decision of the jury shall be final and shall not be subject to any appeal.

The MGI shall not take any responsibility in any matter arising out of any dispute as regards

to the originality of the essay.

Submission could be made either by post or in person to the Head, Department of Tamil

Interesting prizes will be awarded to the winners and Certificate of Participation will also

be awarded to all participants.

2. Story Writing Competition in Tamil

The Story Writing Competition is open to the following categories of participants in Tamil

only:

Category 1: Category 2: Category 3: Lower Secondary Students (Grade 7, Grade 8 & Grade 9)

Upper Secondary Students (Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12 & Grade 13)

Participants above 20 years old (Teachers, University Students & Public)

Topic in Tamil: அறிபவ ஆயுதம்.

No. of words: Around 400 - 600 words

Category 2: Upper Secondary Students (Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12 & Grade 13)

Topic in Tamil: மானத்ததக் காத்த மனிதன்.

No. of words: Around 800 - 1000 words

Category 3: Participants above 20 years old (Teachers, University Students and Public)

Topic in Tamil: புதிய விடியல்.

No. of words: Around 1200 - 2000 words

 

Guidelines for Story Writing Competition

a. b. This competition is open to Mauritian residents only.

Submission could be either in handwritten or typewritten form.

c. Only one entry per participant is allowed.

d. Participants’ attention is drawn to the fact that this competition is not about essay writing,

e. but about story writing and each story should reflect the philosophy of Perarignar Anna.

Participants should not write his/her personal name on the story. They will have to

use a pen name on the story. Participant’s pen name, personal name, age, residential

address, mobile phone number, fixed home number and email address should be enclosed

in a sealed envelope and submitted together with the essay. The participants’ personal

names should be written as per the birth certificate or National Identity Card (NIC).

Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM) - EU–Africa Dialogues: From Shared Legacy Towards a Common Future:

From 12 to 14 June 2025, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” took part in the second inperson consortium meeting of the project “EU–Africa Dialogues: From Shared Legacy Towards a Common Future”, funded under the Erasmus+ Program through the Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM) call. The meeting was organized by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in partnership with the University of Mauritius (UoM) and brought together representatives from the partner institutions: Sofia University, the University of Glasgow, Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, and the University of Mauritius. The working sessions focused on strategic planning, academic content development, and preparation for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) application in 2026. The consortium reviewed the progress on the expected outcomes of the EMDM project and jointly developed the academic and mobility structure for the future joint Master’s program in African Studies, “EU– Africa Dialogues: From Shared Legacy Towards a Common Future”. Key discussions addressed the relevance of the program in relation to labour market needs, student interest, and the strategic frameworks of EU–Africa cooperation, including the Africa–EU Partnership and the Global Gateway. A four-semester mobility model was outlined, combining interdisciplinary study areas with two language tracks (including a fully Francophone track) and opportunities for multiple degrees. Partner roles and responsibilities were clarified, and next steps for finalizing the EMJM application were agreed upon. Beyond the intensive working agenda, the meeting was enriched by the warm hospitality, care, and generous support of the Mauritian hosts. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the University of Mauritius not only created a welcoming and collegial working environment but also provided participants with unforgettable opportunities to immerse themselves in the rich and diverse life, culture, and history of the island. The event strengthened the spirit of partnership and reaffirmed the shared commitment to building a sustainable academic dialogue and bridge between Africa and Europe."

Dr ANCHARAZ KINNOO SUNDHYA DEVI

Dr Sundhya Ancharaz Kinnoo is a senior lecturer at the Language Resources Centre, under the School of Indian Studies at Mahatma Gandhi Institute. She joined the centre in 2007 at the post of lecturer and served the institute in accomplishing various projects on development of technological tools and digital resources in Asian languages and numerous capacity building programmes at institutional and national level.

 Dr Sundhya was awarded ICCR General Cultural Scholarship Scheme for BA (Hons) Hindi (1996-1999) at the prestigious Hansraj College in the University of Delhi. She completed her master’s degree at D.U and PhD in Hindi Fiction (2016) from the University of Mauritius. She also obtained a scholarship to complete the ALICT African Leadership Programme in ICT (2014) by GESCI Global e-school of community initiatives established in collaboration of the African Union and United Nations ICT Taskforce.

 Before embarking in the field of teaching Dr Sundhya completed Certificate Primary (TCP) (General Purpose) in 2003 from the Mauritius Institute of Education. Serving at the Primary Education Sector for 4 years as General-Purpose Teacher, she joined the Secondary Sector as Hindi Educator for another 3 years. She academic qualification and teaching experience in all the sectors has enable her professional engagement in serving for not only undergraduate and post graduate courses but also teacher training and in-service courses and capacity building programmes. She also provides her services to the Mauritius Examination Syndicate for the national examination PSAC and NCE due to her expertise in teaching and evaluation in Hindi Language.

Apart from teaching, she has also ventured as television presenter for the programme ‘Srijan’ - (A weekly talk show on Languages, Literature, Culture, Arts and Creativity on MBC1) She has also been Freelance Newscaster at the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation from 2004-2005.
